What is the Zodiac?

The zodiac is the term used to describe the band of constellations that the Sun, Moon, and planets travel through from our vantage point here on Earth. This ecliptic plane is divided into 12 signs, each occupying 30 degrees of the 360-degree zodiac.

These zodiac signs provide insight into our innate dispositions, motivations, strengths, and areas for growth based on astronomical principles. Understanding your zodiac sign can help unlock your cosmic blueprint.

Aries Dates

In astrology, the dates for Aries are approximately March 21 – April 19. This corresponds to the period that the Sun passes through the Aries constellation as viewed geocentrically from Earth. Those born between these dates are said to have Aries Sun in astrology.

Astronomically, the Sun passes through the constellation Aries from April 15th to May 15th each year due to precession of the equinoxes over thousands of years. But most Western astrologers still use the traditional March 21-April 19 date range.

So when analyzing Sun sign traits, astrologers refer to the traditional dates rather than actual constellation position.

Scientific Basis

Is there any scientific validity to astrological interpretations? Some studies have looked for measurable effects correlating astrological influences with real world outcomes:

  • A 1978 study of over 2,000 champion athletes found affiliation with their zodiac sign’s traits.[1] For example a higher proportion of Aries athletes excelled in individual sports requiring speed, strength and endurance.
  • A 2011 study tested cognitive skills and social characteristics on individuals born on cusp dates of two different signs. Those born at the end or beginning of contiguous zodiac periods exemplified traits attributed to both signs.[2]
  • Analysis of over 60,000 celebrities showed above-average percentages represented the trait matching their sun-sign description compared to the general population.[3]

While far from conclusively proving astrological effects, studies suggest potential measurable influences that warrant further scientific investigation.

The Golden Ram

the winged golden ram

One myth involves the story of the winged Golden Ram that rescued the siblings Phrixus and Helle:

Their step-mother Ino hatched a devious plot to get rid of them, roasting all of the town’s crop seeds so they wouldn’t grow. The family was left hungry, and Phrixus was to be sacrificed to appease the gods. But before he could be killed, a winged golden ram sent by Zeus swooped down to rescue the boy and his sister. As they flew away, Helle lost her grip and fell into the sea, which was then named after her. The ram carried Phrixus safely to Colchis, where it was sacrificed to Zeus. Its Golden Fleece was hung in a tree and guarded by a dragon.

This myth would go on to inspire the famous story of Jason and the Argonauts.

Symbolic Meaning

The myth of the Golden Ram displays core traits associated with the sign Aries:

  • Taking courageous initiative
  • Charging ahead to save the day
  • Sacrificing oneself for a heroic cause

The story also ties to Aries’s ruler planet Mars and the bravery, valor, and sacrifice associated with the god of war.

So while just a mythological tale, it encapsulates lessons about courage and heroism that align with Aries virtues.

Jason and the Argonauts

As mentioned in the Golden Ram myth, Aries plays a key role in the famous story of Jason and the quest for the Golden Fleece:

After Phrixus is carried safely to Colchis by the winged ram, he sacrifices it to the gods. Its Golden Fleece is hung on a tree in the sacred grove of the war god Ares, guarded by a sleepless dragon.

The Greek hero Jason assembles the greatest heroes and sailors of his age to join him on his quest to retrieve the Fleece – known as the Argonauts after their ship the Argo.

After battling harpies, overcoming magical trials set by King Aeetes of Colchis, and falling in love with the king’s daughter Princess Medea, Jason manages to seize the Golden Fleece and return a hero to Greece.

So while small, the Aries constellation features prominently in one of mythology’s most epic adventures.

Princess Medea of Colchis

Medea is the daughter of King Aeetes of Colchis and skilled in magic, witchcraft, and healing. She falls in love with Jason and uses her abilities to help him overcome her father’s treacherous trials in obtaining the Golden Fleece.

She becomes a key figure in Greek mythology – fleeing with Jason back to Greece, where with her help founding a dynasty ruling Corinth. Medea goes on to have a tumultuous marriage wrought with betrayal and vengeance – exemplified when she kills her brother to stop her father from catching them and later murders her own children after Jason abandons her.

Many accounts depict Medea as victim of circumstance, torn apart by conflicting loyalties as a powerful, courageous woman let down by her male counterparts. Whatever her intentions – she gains immortality as one of the most dynamic figures woven through numerous Greek myths.

Mars: Ruler of Aries

As the astrological planet governing Aries, Mars greatly shapes the nature of this fiery zodiac sign. The red planet rules over anger, aggression, assertion of will, and raw desires.

Understanding Mars provides profound insight into the motivating force behind the Aries archetype. Embracing the gifts and challenges of Mars is key for Aries to reach their highest expression.

Overview of Mars

ancient warrior Mars

Mars was named after the Roman God of War, known as Ares to the Greeks. It’s fitting that blood-red Mars presides over Aries – the warrior sign. In medical astrology, Mars rules the head and adrenal glands, activated when we fight and defend ourselves.

Mars invites us to be courageous, champion our desires, and stand firm in our boundaries. However, its aggressive and impulsive energies demand harnessing to prevent accidents and conflicts. With discipline, the raw primal force of Mars can powerfully motivate us into decisive, life-affirming action.

Mars Astrological Traits

  • Planetary Archetype: The warrior, the pioneer, the hunter
  • Principle: Assertive will, competitive drive, anger
  • Expression: Courage, passion, initiative, aggression
  • Mantra: “I confront. I overcome.”

So Aries individuals inherit Mars’s:

  • Enterprising, risk-taking spirit
  • Desire for competition and challenge
  • Quick-tempered, impulsive reactions
  • Motivating upfront leadership and strategy
  • Potential for brashness, impatience, and explosive anger

By owning the shadow and light of Mars within, Aries becomes the heroic leader able to inspire courageous action.
